Dental Growth and Development
As children grow, their teeth and jaws grow and develop in
a pattern. The dentist checks for the normal development
and eruption of primary teeth (‘baby teeth’)
and permanent teeth. With regular examinations, the doctor
can usually detect a problem early.
If the need for orthodontic treatment is determined at
an early age, interceptive orthodontics can sometimes
be used
to influence the growth pattern and decrease the extent
of orthodontic treatment needed when the child is older.
Start early when teaching children the importance of taking
care of their teeth. Education is most effective when it
starts at a young age. The dentist or hygienist will teach
proper dental hygiene and good nutrition to establish healthy
habits for a lifetime.
It is advisable to take small children (under 5 years old)
to a pediatric dental office because the doctor and staff
have special training in the care of infants and toddlers.
In a pediatric dental office, the treatment rooms are decorated
with children’s themes, the chairs are smaller, and
the environment is less frightening to a small child.
