Preventive Care
Sealants
Sealants are plastic coatings applied to the teeth – usually
the molars or back teeth – when the teeth are pitted
or cracked and susceptible to decay or cavities. This treatment
is often used for children who have adult or primary teeth
that need help, but is used for adults too when necessary.
Sealants prevent tooth decay from starting, and can stop
existing tooth decay from spreading by cutting off oxygen
and bacteria - sealing the teeth. The doctors can evaluate
yours or your children’s teeth and tell you if sealants
are a necessary treatment.
Fluoride Treatment
You are familiar with fluoride from the label of mouthwashes
and toothpaste. Did you know that it is a mineral that occurs
naturally in many foods and water supplies? Fluoride reduces
tooth decay by strengthening the teeth and helps to protect
against bacteria that can cause damage. While you get various
amounts of fluoride naturally as well as in many toothpastes
and mouthwashes, additional treatments can help to protect
your teeth from decay and help maintain your healthy smile.
Our office provides a home treatment for patients using special
trays that are custom shaped to fit the mouth for topical
application. It is a safe and effective way to protect the
surface of your teeth.
Nutritional Counseling
A good dental health is not only a matter of clean teeth
and gums, but good nutrition as well. Your body is only
as strong and healthy as what it takes in. Many foods are
high
in sugar and can lead to tooth decay. Many drinks are acidic,
high in sugar and can damage or stain teeth. Coffee, tea
alcohol and soft drinks are just a few of the things that
can affect your smile. While it may not be necessary to
give up what you enjoy, there are ways to balance eating
and drinking
habits to prevent staining or decay. Our dentists can provide
counseling on good nutrition that is important not only
for the mouth, but the entire body.
